RAL Classic is the standard color system for paints, powder coatings, and architectural finishes across Europe. This converter gives you approximate sRGB and hex values so you can preview a RAL color on screen before specifying it.
What RAL Classic is and where it is used
RAL Classic (maintained by the German RAL Institute) defines around 210 standardised colors used primarily for:
- Architectural metalwork and facades — steel cladding, window frames, fencing, curtain walling
- Powder coating and liquid paints — industrial and automotive finishing
- Safety and marking colors — RAL 3020 Traffic Red and RAL 1003 Signal Yellow appear on safety signs across Europe
- Appliances and consumer products — kitchen equipment, HVAC units, and electrical enclosures often specify a RAL code for consistent colour matching across manufacturers
Unlike a brand-specific system such as Pantone, RAL codes are published openly and accepted by any compliant supplier worldwide, which makes them the default in European construction and manufacturing specs.
How it works
Each RAL Classic color has a four-digit code. The first digit groups the hue family: 1000s are yellows, 2000s oranges, 3000s reds, 4000s violets, 5000s blues, 6000s greens, 7000s greys, 8000s browns, and 9000s whites, blacks, and metallics. The tool holds a local table of these codes mapped to approximate screen colors and filters it as you type by number or name.
Commonly referenced RAL codes
| RAL Code | Name | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 9005 | Jet Black | Metal frames, furniture, interiors |
| 9010 | Pure White | Facades, appliances, window profiles |
| 7016 | Anthracite Grey | Window frames, industrial equipment |
| 5010 | Gentian Blue | Machinery, signage |
| 3020 | Traffic Red | Safety signage, fire equipment |
| 6005 | Moss Green | Agricultural equipment, railings |
| 1003 | Signal Yellow | Construction equipment, warning signs |
These codes illustrate the range — the full RAL Classic set covers the complete spectrum.
How to search
Type either the four-digit number (for example 7016) or any part of the English name (for example anthracite) to filter. The swatch updates immediately to give a rough on-screen preview. Click the hex value to copy it for use in CSS, a design tool, or a rendering application.
Notes and limits
These values are approximations. RAL is a physical coatings standard, so the screen rendering will differ from a painted sample, and gloss level and substrate further shift the appearance. A matte RAL 9005 and a gloss RAL 9005 are technically the same color code but will look visibly different on a wall. For any color-critical job, specify the RAL number to your supplier and confirm against a physical fan deck. Use the hex and RGB output for digital mockups, renders, and CSS only — never as the authoritative spec for a paint or coating order.
