What this tool does
The IELTS to CEFR Level Converter translates your overall IELTS band into a level on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), from A1 to C2. Many visa routes, universities, and employers ask for a CEFR level rather than an IELTS number, and this tool gives you the aligned answer to quote on application forms.
The alignment table
Cambridge English published the standard IELTS-to-CEFR alignment. The tool applies this mapping:
| IELTS Overall Band | CEFR Level | Descriptor |
|---|---|---|
| Below 3.0 | A1 | Beginner |
| 3.0–3.5 | A2 | Elementary |
| 4.0–5.0 | B1 | Intermediate |
| 5.5–6.5 | B2 | Upper intermediate |
| 7.0–8.0 | C1 | Advanced |
| 8.5–9.0 | C2 | Mastery / Proficiency |
Note that band 4.0 starts B1 and band 5.5 starts B2 — there is no half-band overlap between levels in this alignment.
Why the mapping matters
The CEFR is the standard language scale used by European universities and many employers worldwide, and it is embedded in numerous visa systems. If you have an IELTS score but an application asks for a CEFR level:
- Schengen study visas and EU university admissions typically use CEFR.
- UK university pre-sessional courses often describe their entry requirements as B2 or C1.
- Employers in multilingual organisations frequently ask for CEFR on CVs.
- Germany’s Fachkräfte immigration pathway references CEFR for language assessment.
Quoting your CEFR equivalent saves the admissions or HR officer from doing the conversion themselves, and this tool gives you the correct aligned level.
How to use the result on applications
When a form asks for your CEFR level, quote the level this tool returns and also note your IELTS overall band and test date in any supporting notes. Many institutions want to see the underlying test score to verify the equivalence — the CEFR level is a summary but your IELTS Test Report Form is the primary document.
A note on boundary bands
If your IELTS score sits right at a CEFR boundary — for example, band 5.0 (top of B1) or 7.0 (bottom of C1) — some institutions may interpret your level differently. A band 7.0 aligned to C1 may still be treated as strong B2 by a program with a C1 minimum if they want to see 7.5 or above. Always confirm the exact IELTS or CEFR minimum required, especially for professional registrations like the UK’s GMC (medical) or NMC (nursing).
