How do I create a component in Figma?

Select one or more layers and press Command Option K on macOS or Ctrl Alt K on Windows. To create a frame from a selection instead, use Command/Ctrl Option/Alt G.

Figma keyboard shortcuts

This searchable reference lists the Figma shortcuts that product and UI designers use all day, with the correct keys for both macOS and Windows. It covers the tool keys, selection, edit and arrange commands, text formatting, view and zoom, and the prototyping and Dev Mode actions.

How it works

Figma maps drawing tools to single letters — F for Frame, R for Rectangle, T for Text — and uses Command (macOS) or Ctrl (Windows) with Shift and Option/Alt for editing commands. Zoom uses Shift plus a number, and deep selection into nested groups uses Command/Ctrl-click plus Enter to step in and out. Pick your operating system, search for an action, and each row shows the exact keys for that platform.

Practical tips for faster workflows

Component keyboard path: select any layers you want to turn into a component, press ⌘ ⌥ K (macOS) — Figma names it automatically. To create a local component from an instance, use ⌘ ⌥ B to detach first. Use ⌘ / to search for any action, including ones you do not remember the shortcut for — the command palette covers everything.

Dev Mode workflow: press ⇧ D to toggle Dev Mode on a file, then ⌘ C on a selected layer copies the CSS, iOS Swift, or Android XML depending on which tab you have open. This is the fastest way to hand off spacing and colour tokens to an engineer.

Browser vs desktop: a handful of combinations clash with browser shortcuts (especially ⌘ W to close a tab and F5 to reload). If you spend serious time in Figma, the desktop app removes these conflicts and also enables some shortcut actions that the browser cannot intercept.
