Ohio has a 5.75% statewide sales-tax base set by law, but what you actually pay at the checkout depends on where you are shopping. Every one of Ohio’s 88 counties adds its own local rate on top — ranging from an extra 0.50% in Butler County all the way to 2.25% in Cuyahoga County. That means combined rates across Ohio run from 6.25% up to 8.00%, with a population-weighted average of roughly 7.24%.
This Ohio sales tax calculator handles both directions:
- ADD mode — you know the pre-tax (sticker) price and want to find out how much tax you will owe and what the total will be at the register.
- REMOVE mode — you have a receipt that shows the tax-inclusive total and want to find out how much of that was tax and what the original pre-tax price was.
It also shows a line-by-line breakdown of the Ohio state portion (always 5.75%) and the local county/city portion so you can see exactly where each dollar of tax goes.
How it works
Ohio levies its sales tax under Ohio Revised Code Chapter 5739. The state portion is 5.75% on every taxable retail sale. On top of that, county commissioners may vote to impose a county sales tax of up to 1.5%, and counties can also levy a transit authority levy of up to 1.5%. The total combined rate is the sum of all levies that apply to the location of the sale (not the buyer’s home address).
The calculation in both modes is straightforward algebra:
ADD mode (forward)
tax = pre-tax price x combined rate
total = pre-tax price + tax
REMOVE mode (reverse)
pre-tax = total paid / (1 + combined rate)
tax = total paid - pre-tax
The state and local portions of the tax are then split proportionally — if the combined rate is 7.50% and the state share is 5.75%, the state collects 5.75/7.50 = 76.67% of the total tax collected.
Worked example
You buy a laptop for $899.00 (pre-tax) at a store in Franklin County (Columbus). Franklin County’s combined rate is 7.50% (5.75% state + 1.75% county).
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Pre-tax price | $899.00 |
| Ohio state tax (5.75%) | $51.69 |
| Franklin County tax (1.75%) | $15.73 |
| Total sales tax (7.50%) | $67.43 |
| Total you pay | $966.43 |
Now suppose you see a receipt total of $966.43 and want to verify it. Enter $966.43 in REMOVE mode with a 7.50% combined rate and the calculator confirms the pre-tax price of $899.00 and tax of $67.43 — matching the forward calculation exactly.
