New York charges a 4% statewide base sales-tax rate on top of which every county — and the five boroughs of New York City — adds its own local levy. The result is that the combined rate you actually pay at the register ranges from about 7% in some upstate counties all the way to 8.875% in New York City, the highest rate in the state. The statewide average across all jurisdictions is roughly 8.53%.

This calculator handles both everyday directions: add tax to a pre-tax (net) price to find the total you will pay, or strip tax from a total you have already paid to recover the pre-tax amount and the exact tax charged. The 4% New York state portion is fixed and pre-loaded; you supply the local (county + city + special district) rate, with one-click presets for New York City, Nassau, Suffolk, Erie (Buffalo), Albany, Monroe (Rochester), Onondaga (Syracuse), Westchester, and several other major jurisdictions.

How it works

Sales tax is a flat percentage applied to the selling price of taxable goods (and some services). New York’s combined rate is the sum of two components:

  • State rate — 4.0%: fixed, collected by every seller in New York State.
  • Local rate — varies: set by the county, city, or special district in which the sale occurs. New York City charges 4.5% local (inclusive of the MCTD surcharge); most upstate counties charge between 3% and 4.75%.

ADD mode (pre-tax to total):

tax   = pre-tax amount x combined rate
total = pre-tax amount + tax

REMOVE mode (total to pre-tax):

pre-tax = total / (1 + combined rate)
tax     = total - pre-tax

The state and local portions are split in proportion to their respective rates so you can see exactly how much flows to Albany versus the locality.

Worked example

Suppose you are buying a $450 laptop in New York City, where the combined rate is 8.875%.

ItemCalculationAmount
Pre-tax price$450.00
NY state tax (4%)$450 times 0.04$18.00
NYC local tax (4.5%)$450 times 0.045$20.25
Total sales tax (8.875%)$450 times 0.08875$39.94
Total price$450 + $39.94$489.94

Now suppose you have a receipt showing $489.94 and want to verify the tax. Switch to REMOVE mode, enter $489.94, keep the combined rate at 8.875%, and the calculator gives:

pre-tax = $489.94 / 1.08875 = $450.00
tax     = $489.94 - $450.00 = $39.94

The two modes are exact inverses of each other, so you get consistent figures in both directions.

New York state base rate and typical combined rates

New York’s 4% state base rate has been in place since 1971 and is among the lower state-only rates in the US. However, New York City’s 4.5% local rate pushes the combined NYC rate to 8.875%, placing it well above the national average combined rate of roughly 8.7%. Outside the city, rates are generally in the 7–8% range. Notable examples:

  • Nassau / Suffolk counties (Long Island): 8.625% combined (4% + 4.625%)
  • Erie County (Buffalo area): 8.75% combined (4% + 4.75%)
  • Albany County: 8% combined (4% + 4%)
  • Westchester County: 7% combined (4% + 3%)
  • Saratoga County: 7% combined (4% + 3%)

Rates are sourced from the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance (2025) and are updated quarterly. Always confirm the exact rate for your ZIP code at tax.ny.gov before filing or remitting tax. All calculations run entirely in your browser; nothing is sent to any server.
