Maryland imposes a flat 6% sales tax on most retail purchases, making it one of the easiest states to calculate tax for. Unlike the majority of US states, Maryland levies no county or municipal sales tax — every customer in every jurisdiction pays the same single rate. There is no rate table to look up, no county-level exceptions, and no city surcharges to track. The combined rate is always 6% unless a specific item is exempt.

How the calculator works

The tool operates in two modes:

  • Add tax to a price. Enter the pre-tax price. The calculator multiplies by the state rate (6%) plus any local rate you set (default 0%) to find the tax amount, then adds it to show the total you will pay at the register. Formula: total = price × (1 + rate/100).

  • Remove tax from a total. Enter the tax-inclusive amount shown on a receipt. The calculator divides by (1 + rate/100) to recover the original pre-tax price, then reports the tax that was embedded in that total. Formula: pre-tax = total / 1.06 at the standard 6% rate.

Both modes display a full line-by-line breakdown — state tax portion, optional local portion, combined rate, and grand total — with a copy button on each row so you can paste figures directly into a spreadsheet or expense report.

Maryland state base rate and typical combined rate

Maryland’s state sales tax has been 6% since 2008 and applies uniformly across all 24 jurisdictions (23 counties plus Baltimore City). Because there are zero local add-ons, the statewide average combined rate is also exactly 6.0% — lower than the US average combined rate of roughly 7.0–8.0% found in states that layer city and county taxes on top.

Worked example

You are buying furniture priced at $480.00 before tax in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

  • State tax: $480.00 × 0.06 = $28.80
  • Local tax: $0.00 (no local tax in Maryland)
  • Total at register: $508.80

Going the other way: your receipt shows $508.80. In “Remove tax” mode the calculator returns a pre-tax price of $508.80 / 1.06 = $480.00 and tax paid of $28.80.

Pre-tax priceMaryland tax at 6%Total
$25.00$1.50$26.50
$100.00$6.00$106.00

Notable exemptions

Maryland exempts most unprepared groceries, prescription drugs, and agricultural products from the 6% rate. Prepared food sold by restaurants, candy, soft drinks, and most services are taxable at the full rate. Always verify the exact exemption status of your item with the Maryland Comptroller before relying on this calculator for compliance purposes.
