How is the number of days calculated?

The calculator finds the next calendar date that matches the birth month and day (in the current or next year). It then subtracts today midnight from that target midnight and divides by 86 400 seconds, rounding to whole days. No network calls are made — everything runs locally in your browser.

What happens with a leap-day birthday (29 February)?

If someone was born on 29 February the calculator finds the next true leap year and counts to that 29 February. In non-leap years a leap-day birthday is technically celebrated on 28 February or 1 March depending on preference, but this tool always targets the actual 29 February in the next available leap year, giving the exact legal/official count.

What are the milestone ages highlighted?

The tool flags the ages 1, 5, 10, 13, 16, 18, 21, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 75, 80, 90, and 100 as milestones. When the next birthday falls on one of these ages the card shows a highlighted badge so you know to plan something special.

How is the zodiac sign determined?

Western (tropical) zodiac sign boundaries are used. For example, Aries runs from 21 March to 19 April, Taurus from 20 April to 20 May, and so on. The sign is based on the birth month and day only, not the year.

How does the Chinese zodiac work in this calculator?

The Chinese zodiac repeats on a 12-year cycle. The calculation anchors on 1900 (Rat year) and computes ((birthYear - 1900) mod 12) to find the animal: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, or Pig. Note that this uses the Gregorian year; for a date near Chinese New Year (late January to mid-February) the Chinese lunisolar new year boundary may shift the animal by one, so treat it as a close approximation.

Are the birthdays stored on a server?

No. All data is saved exclusively in your browser localStorage under the key days-until-birthday-people. Nothing is transmitted to any server. Clearing your browser data will erase the saved list.

How it works

The core calculation is straightforward and runs entirely in your browser:

The birth month and day are extracted from the date of birth you enter.
The calculator constructs a target date: this year’s occurrence of that month and day. If that date has already passed today, the target moves to next year.
Both dates are normalised to midnight local time to avoid daylight-saving-time interference.
The difference is divided by 86 400 000 milliseconds (one day) and rounded to a whole number.

For leap-day birthdays (29 February) the tool locates the next true leap year rather than substituting 28 February or 1 March — a much more meaningful countdown for people who share that rare birthday.

Formula note

Days until = floor( (nextBirthdayMidnight - todayMidnight) / 86 400 000 )

The turning age is simply: nextBirthday.getFullYear() - birthYear.

The approximate weeks and months figures use 7 days per week and 30.44 days per month (the average Gregorian month length), rounded to the nearest integer.

Worked example

Suppose today is 1 June 2026 and you enter a date of birth of 15 September 1990.

Target date: 15 September 2026 (not yet passed).
Days until: (15 Sep 2026 midnight) - (1 Jun 2026 midnight) = 106 days.
Turning age: 2026 - 1990 = 36.
Weeks until: floor(106 / 7) = 15 weeks.
Months until: round(106 / 30.44) = 3 months.
Zodiac sign: Virgo (23 Aug - 22 Sep).
Birthstone: Sapphire (September).
Chinese zodiac: ((1990 - 1900) mod 12) = 90 mod 12 = 6 → Horse.
Milestone: 36 is not on the milestone list, so no badge.

Now suppose the birthday were 21 March 1986:

Target date (if today is 1 June 2026): 21 March 2027 (date passed, advance to next year).
Days until: 293 days.
Turning age: 41.
Zodiac sign: Aries (21 Mar - 19 Apr).
Birthstone: Aquamarine (March).
Chinese zodiac: ((1986 - 1900) mod 12) = 86 mod 12 = 2 → Tiger.

That means in December you might see your colleague’s 3-day-away birthday jump above your partner’s April birthday. The list is saved to localStorage and survives page reloads — no account required.

When someone’s birthday falls today the day count switches to a live hours:minutes:seconds countdown to midnight, giving you one final nudge before the day ends.

Privacy

Every calculation is performed in JavaScript inside your own browser tab. No date of birth, name, or result is ever sent to a server. The saved list lives only in your browser’s localStorage and can be cleared at any time by removing the entry or clearing your browser data.
