Arizona levies a Transaction Privilege Tax (TPT) at a statewide base rate of 5.6% — unchanged since 2013 and confirmed by the Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR) for 2025. On top of this, every city and county adds its own local TPT, so the rate you actually pay depends on where the transaction takes place. This calculator uses the real 5.6% state base rate as a locked preset, adds an editable local rate field pre-filled with the statewide average, and works in both directions: Add (pre-tax price to total) and Remove (total back to pre-tax).

How it works

The calculator runs two formulas entirely in your browser:

Add mode — you enter a pre-tax price and the tool applies the combined rate:

Total tax = Pre-tax price x Combined rate Total = Pre-tax price + Total tax

Remove (reverse) mode — you enter a tax-inclusive total and the tool extracts the pre-tax component:

Pre-tax = Total / (1 + Combined rate) Tax already included = Total - Pre-tax

The combined rate is the sum of the Arizona state TPT (5.6%, fixed) and whatever local rate you set. The results panel splits the tax into a state portion and a local portion so you can see exactly how much goes to each level of government.

Arizona sales-tax rates explained

Arizona’s TPT is technically levied on the vendor, not the buyer. In practice vendors add it to the sale price, so it works like a conventional sales tax for consumers. The statewide base rate of 5.6% has been stable since 2013. Cities and counties layer additional TPT on top:

  • Maricopa County (Phoenix metro) adds 0.7%
  • Pima County (Tucson metro) adds 0.5%
  • Coconino County (Flagstaff area) adds 1.3%
  • City-level rates range from 0% (unincorporated areas) up to 3.75% or more in resort cities like Sedona

The statewide average combined rate is approximately 8.37% once all city and county add-ons are weighted by population. Phoenix comes in at 8.6% (state 5.6% + city 2.0% + Maricopa county 0.7%), while Glendale reaches 9.2%.

Worked example

A customer buys electronics for $350 in Phoenix (combined rate 8.6%):

  • State TPT: $350 x 0.056 = $19.60
  • Local tax: $350 x 0.030 = $10.50
  • Total tax: $30.10
  • Total paid: $380.10

Now the same customer returns the item and you need to confirm the pre-tax value from the $380.10 receipt:

$380.10 / 1.086 = $350.00 pre-tax

CityCombined rateTax on $350Total

Tucson8.7%$30.45$380.45
Scottsdale8.05%$28.18$378.18
Chandler7.8%$27.30$377.30
Flagstaff9.18%$32.13$382.13

Every result is computed in your browser — nothing is transmitted to any server.

Note: groceries (food for home consumption) are exempt from Arizona state TPT but some cities still apply a local rate. The calculator covers standard retail transactions. For exact rates by ZIP code, use the ADOR lookup at azdor.gov.
